Rapier Scholars’ Tournament: 19:00 (inspections 18:30)
We welcome all those who were authorized in fencing for the first time on or after August 29, 2022 (three years ago) to a fencing tournament of skill and courtesy to kick off Fall Crown at 7pm on Friday, August 29! (Inspections start at 6:30 sharp.)
– Overall winner
– Gallantry (good manners on and off the field, including courtesy, fight etiquette, etc.)
Bring your best weapon style. All fighters must be authorized and will be inspected before participating.
Luciano has proposed a double-elimination style tournament to practice for the upcoming Kingdom Rapier Championship and various baronial championships, so folks have a chance to try out the format. Hoping if there’s time/space we’ll be able to accommodate some pickups too depending on numbers!
This is a tournament intended to celebrate newer fencers who are looking for an opportunity to meet the community and test themselves against fencers at a similar level of experience. More experienced fighters are welcome to come and test mettle, but will not be eligible to win prizes.
Got questions?

Crown Tournament (heavy): 12:00 p.m.
inspection 10:00; invocation of the lists: 11:00
hosted by Duke Ivar Roriksson the Black
Our Wonderful King and Queen seek Heirs!
Pre-registration is now OPEN for the Crown Tournament. Their Majesties have declared the tournament is a standard double elimination format and the finals are the best 2 of 3. No weapon restrictions beyond must be a legal weapon.
Now the fun stuff!!!
HRM Astrid and HRM Hrogn would like both the fighter and the consorts to bring tourney tiles for the board. As soon as we are down to few enough fighters that the board has room for two tiles for each contender, we’ll be posting the board as Fighter and Consort vs. Fighter and Consort. If you don’t have a tourney tile, there will be spares in the box you can borrow but I encourage all entrants to take the time and help us honor our consorts in this new way. If both partners of the contending couple are fighting, it’d be ideal if you could bring 2 tiles for both individuals. If that’s a lot, then we have a plan and will work it out.
Secondly Banners!!! Please bring a banner to put around the tourney field. It should come with you held by your banner bearer during processional and then we will circle the field with everybody’s banner for the tournament. If you aren’t fighting in the tournament, you’re still welcome to put a banner around the field because We see the Crown Tournament as a celebration of the Kingdom and the populace so we aren’t limiting banners to only the fighters. Banners aren’t required for entry into the tournament but they are definitely appreciated. I’m sure that many noticed our new banners around the erics at 10th Year and I’m pretty sure that many would agree that they looked sharp. So let’s build on that!
Thirdly, Letters of Intent are appreciated, but not required. If you enjoy making them, we’d love to receive them. If they don’t improve your SCA, then diminishing your day doesn’t improve ours. Our default position is that this tournament is open to all Avacalians because of the celebration aspect and the fact that we’re very inclusive. If there is some reason that you wonder if you’ll be allowed to fight, such as residence change etc., please reach out to us ahead of time. Consorts will be required to attend the tournament and we aren’t accepting absent entries.
if you’re wondering if you’re good enough to enter Crown, please understand that the answer is the same as “Are you Authorized”. We’ll have enough winners whether you enter or not. But if you don’t enter, then we we might not have enough losers!!! I believe in all the new fighters out there and their ability to lose a Crown Tournament!! YOU CAN DO IT!!! It’s a celebration, so please participate and join us in celebrating the Kingdom, the Populace, Chivalry, and the Dream. This is the stuff that our culture is made of!
Save time at the lists table, and REGISTER HERE! Pre-registration will close August 26

Arcarius Tournament: 10:00
Good day to you, you fine persons!
We’re on the books for this event to have an arcuarius – style target archery tournament.
What is that, you might ask?
Why thank you, conveniently curious hypothetical populace member!
Conceptually it’s very similar to a squires or provosts tournament. Once the tournament begins you find an opponent, shoot a match against each other. Repeat as many times as it’s fun for you and the scheduled time allows. Report wins and losses to the lists.
Prizes awarded for best win percentage and chivalric behaviour.
This tournament is open to anyone who is a current Arcuarius or equivalent and anyone sponsored by a member of the Order of the Mark (identified as Ranger), Order of the Grey Goose Shaft (identified as Archos) or any of the equivalent orders from other kingdoms.
No actual fealty is necessary to get into the tournament, but sponsorship is necessary.
Provost Tournament (Rapier): inspection: 12:00; tournament 12:30 – 13:45 ish

Associates Meet & Greet Charcuterie Party: After court
hosted by Conan, Robert Boniface and Allert Pierson
We invite you to bring a bit of cheese, meat, crackers, fruit, nuts, or your leftover Doritos and share Avacal’s biggest ever charcuterie board (we hope) with your fellow associates and folks interested in any Peerage path! This is an informal snack and social with no particular agenda except socializing with folks across the kingdom on or interested in any peerage path. We’re stronger together! Who’s invited? EVERYBODY! Yes, even you! (ESPECIALLY you.)
Bring your own chair, plate and a charcuterie ingredient with appropriate serving materials and come mix and mingle to close out the event on Sunday evening after court by the Erics. Feel free to drop in and drop out as the evening dictates!

Fallen Friends Memorial Tournaments: Rapier & Archery: 9:00
Rapier hosted by William Bennet: Archery hosted by Freydis Birthesdottir: location at the Archery Field
Join us Monday morning on Crown weekend (September 1st) for the Fallen Friends Memorial tournaments. We will be starting at 9 am (before curia).
Please come together and join us for the annual Fallen Friends Memorial tournaments. These tournaments are a time to remember those that we have lost, either recently or previously. Compete in their honour, display the great qualities they inspire in you, and remember the positive ways they impacted you.
For those that wish, there will be an opportunity at the beginning to give a few words about someone that you have lost and why they are important to you. This is completely optional, and many (if not most) decide to not take this opportunity.
Again this year, we are lucky to have both archery and fencing tournaments.
On the Archery side, we are extremely lucky to have Freydis planning an amazing shoot.
Each archer will be asked to introduce themselves. As each archer introduces themselves, they will also share the memory of someone they have lost who inspired them (this does not have to be someone from the SCA).
We compete in their honour, displaying the qualities they inspire in each of us, and remember the positive ways they impacted our journey.
Format:
Nonstandard targets at 20 yards, 30 yards, and 40 yards.
20 Yards score 1 up to 5 points per arrow
30 Yards score 1 up to 5 points per arrow
40 Yards scored 1 up to 5 points per arrow
Six arrows in your own time, no timed end.
On the Fencing side, we will be having 2 divisions. The standard rapier open division (any authorized weapon form except 2-handed sword) and the Master Edmund 2-Handed sword division (2 handed swords only).
As an option for both tournaments, if both combatants wish to use cut and thrust rules for the match, that is allowed, however the default will be heavy rapier rules.
As these are memorial tournaments, participants will be competing for many reasons. Though we are recording the results, it is more about representing with honour, dignity, class and respect for those we have lost. At times, one of us may get emotional and need some time, please respect everyone’s needs.
If you have a question or idea, please let us know.
